What is a Strong Sense of Self
A strong sense of self means knowing who you are and what you believe in. It’s a strong and confident feeling about yourself and more importantly: staying true to that feeling. It’s being comfortable with who you are, being strong in your opinions and not trying to adjust yourself to be more like someone else.
A strong sense of self may also be referred to as a strong “self-identity” or “self-concept”. A strong sense of self is a deeply rooted and stable understanding of who you are as an individual. It encompasses your beliefs, values, personality, emotions, and your overall understanding of your own identity.
People who have a strong sense of self are naturally more confident people because we have a strong belief in ourselves and our abilities.Having a strong sense of self means knowing that you can handle challenges that may come your way. Just as importantly, a strong sense of self helps you to trust in your own judgment with the challenges.
When you have a strong sense of self, you’re not afraid to try new things or speak up for yourself if something bothers you. You feel comfortable in your own skin and don’t feel the need to pretend to be someone you’re not.

How to Develop a Strong Sense of Self
Increase Self Awareness
Begin by paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Journaling or other mindfulness practices can help you gain insight into your true self. The more you understand about yourself, the stronger your sense of self will become.
Define Values and Core Beliefs
Identifying the principles and beliefs that are most important to you is crucial if you want to develop a strong sense of self. These values and beliefs serve as your compass in decision-making and navigating life’s challenges. If you don’t know what your values are – how can you make choices that align with them?!
Take time to reflect on what truly matters to you. Using these values as a guide in your actions and choices moving forward is a great way to develop a strong sense of self.
Self-Acceptance
Embrace all aspects of yourself, including imperfections and flaws. Practice self-compassion and acknowledge that you are worthy of love and acceptance just as you are. This acceptance forms the bedrock of a strong sense of self.
Self-acceptance is also how we fully heal ourselves. We’ve all heard about the “healing journey” and it gives the impression that there’s something to “fix” within us. But, we aren’t broken! The healing journey is about accepting ourselves, not fixing ourselves. You can dive deeper into this subject in my YouTube video “Are We Ever Fully Healed? The Lifelong Work vs The Healing Journey“.
Build up Self Confidence
Start by acknowledging your accomplishments, no matter how small. Create a list of the things you’ve done in your life that you’re proud of. These don’t need to be huge things! Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is something to be proud of. Re-read your list and celebrate your strengths and abilities.
To develop self confidence moving forward you can set achievable goals and work towards them. With each success, your confidence will grow. Remember, confidence is a skill that can be developed over time.
Remain True to Yourself – Authenticity is Key
Stay genuine and true to your own beliefs, even if they differ from others. Embrace your uniqueness and don’t feel pressured to conform. Authenticity builds a solid foundation for a strong sense of self, allowing you to navigate life with honesty and integrity.
Create a Self-Care Routine
Prioritize self-care to nurture your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. This includes regular exercise, sufficient sleep, balanced nutrition, and activities that bring you joy. Taking care of yourself reinforces your sense of worth and creates a positive self-image.
I often discuss the importance of having a full-rounded self-care routine: mind, body and soul. If you’re unsure of where to start with self-care.. make three lists for each: Mind, Body, Soul. Jot down a few things that you can do to tend to your mental health, physical health and spiritual health.
