Typically, I begin writing these roundups of the things I loved before the month ends. Yet, I’m starting to edit and going to publish this article on January 14, 2024. I also typically aim to publish them before the 2nd of the following month. I’m going to be straight up – the second half of December and first half of January have been rough for me. I had to face a lot of shit that I had been running from for a long time. But the difference between the period of roughness I experienced in the last month and the periods of roughness I’ve experienced in the past? I didn’t lose myself in it.
I strongly believe I owe a large part of that to this practice. Finding gratitude for the small things (even amidst despair, triggering situations and more) has helped me to maintain my light, even through the darkness. Life isn’t about being “love and light” 24/7 or maintaining positivity all the time. But it is about keeping light in your heart, even when the rest of you is lost in the dark. Trusting that the light remains at the end of the tunnel, even if you’ve lost sight of it. I explain a bit more about the shadow in this video, if you’re interested in digging deeper. I’d also suggest watching this video on “good ego vs bad ego“, which touches into the same topics. And even though the month was tough, here are the things I still found space to find gratitude for and the things I loved in December 2023:
Things I Loved: December 2023
First and foremost – I loved December for the family time! The holidays to me are about time with family, not presents or gifts. And in December the family time was potent! We had a big gathering on December 9 as many of us couldn’t be there for Christmas Eve. And then on Christmas Eve we also had a big gathering, as well. I made vlogs about both of these days and you can watch them below!
My Parents House
Piggybacking off of the family time was just the cozy feels of Christmas at my parents house. Christmas was always one of the best times growing up and the house just feels so cozy at Christmas! I think part of the reason I didn’t completely fly off the handles this past month was because of the warm, loving vibes in the house.
The Last of 2023’s Flowers
If you’re new here… I’m letting you in on a little secret. I love flowers! They’re some of my favorite pieces of nature and I love how effortlessly beautiful they can be. December had a fair share of florals and even a cheeky little strawberry bloom. One of my favorite things is taking a pause to appreciate the beauty of nature, which is always around us if we choose to see it.
A Big Beautiful Moon
The Cancer full moon was the last full moon of the year and she was big, bright, and beautiful. Cancer is ruled by the moon, making it extra potent. Cancer is also known as a nurturing and sensitive sign so it also wasn’t a surprise that it coincided with alot of sensitivity on my part.😅
Cheeky Little Love Notes
I believe that the notes on car tags/license plates are angels speaking to us. Seeing “NOW I LIVE” a few days after feeling like I went through a (metaphorical) death made me laugh out loud. I also just loved the “NO SHADE” on a chrome car. Personally, I tend to throw a little shade here and there.
A Beautiful View
The view this night was paired with the type of conversation that causes you to lose time. A rarity nowadays! I might even be so bold as to say the conversation was so good it made the view, “eh”. Regardless, the night, the view and the conversation was something I really loved in December, 2023.
I haven’t painted in aaaaages. Truthfully, I haven’t felt very inspired to. But in December 2023 – I picked up my paintbrushes again. I didn’t have any larger canvases so instead I put together 9 mini canvases and gave them all their own looks to. The only thing that they have in common is that they’re dripped in gold and I like to think they represent different parts of me (which also don’t “match” traditionally).
On the new moon I hosted another space for the femme-preneur. A zoom call where I discuss some of the many things I’ve learned as a business owner/entrepreneur for the last 15 years. I’ll be hosting a few more in the upcoming months and if you’re interested you can click to sign up here.
Fairy Lights in the Yoga Studio
If you know me, you know how much I love some fairy lights! Seeing them set up in the yoga studio in November made me so happy. In December, I was *THRILLED* to learn that they decided to keep them up year round!
Skies and Skylines
One of my favorite views of the city skyline is from the Whitestone Bridge and the view didn’t disappoint on my way home from upstate in December. The way that the clouds broke open over the skyline was so pretty!
I used some of the last of our summer tomatoes to make a delicious tomato soup! If you’re interested more about some of my eats you can check out the Things I ate this December to Support my Menstrual Cycle.
Sunsets and Pink Skies
One thing that always makes me happy is to see a pink sky, especially at the end of a hard day. I feel like its one of Gods ways of telling me that everything is going to be okay. There were a few cute pink skies for me in December!
As I mentioned in the beginning of this article – December was rough. However, as you can see from this post – it didn’t lack beautiful moments. At the end of the day, the little things are the big things and the little things really kept me going. Taking a moment to appreciate the sunset or noticing the flowers that have withstood the freeze may seem small and insignificant but those things help to maintain an overall gratuitous mindset. Within that grateful mindset – I am able to hold onto the understanding that tough times are temporary, a part of life, and typically lead to breakthroughs and better times.
